Ramblings on Thomas Paine’s Common Sense

Our system of government was established to provide as much freedom to the individual as possible. This combined with just enough government to provide the security necessary to make freedom possible for the people. This is just about all that our government should be responsible for.
“Here, then, is the origin and rise of government; namely, a mode rendered necessary by the inability of moral virtue to govern the world; here too is the design and end of government, viz. freedom and security. And however our eyes may be dazzled with show, or our ears deceived by sound; however prejudice may warp our wills, or interest darken our understanding, the simple voice of nature and reason will say, it is right.” (Thomas Paine)
Now that our eyes have been dazzled with show and our ears deceived by sound we are told by the dazzler that our Constitution is a “flawed document” and we need to remake The United States of America.

We are told that we need to have health care like Spain and England. We are told we need to be part of this “World Community” and we need to respect, not Constitutional laws but “World laws.” We are told we need to be tolerant and accept other cultures like France and accept other cultures backwards law like Sharia Law. In short we need to be like Europe. We have already had our President go over to Europe and apologize for American arrogance. Talk about arrogant. So they say our Constitution is old and out of date and our progressive Presidents want America to resemble Europe? Let us remember what the Jews said to Samuel in the Bible: “Behold thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways, now make us a king to judge us like all the other nations” (1 Samuel 8:5 Quoted out of Thomas Paine’s Common Sense).
Thomas Paine hit this nail right on the head even before our Constitution was written, when he said: “And here we cannot but observe that their motives were bad, viz. that they might be like unto other nations…whereas their true glory lay in being as much unlike them as possible.”
Sure our Constitution is a couple hundred years old but it works. It works because it is based on timeless principles, values, and laws. The problem is that it’s “sons walk not in thy ways.” Now give us a President to make us like all other nations, whereas our true glory is America being as much unlike any other nation as possible.
Can we at least try and remember why people started coming to America. Does anyone remember the pilgrims? And now these progressive Presidents want us to “return” to England and Europe it would seem. “This new world hath been the asylum for the persecuted lovers of civil and religious liberty from every part of Europe. Hither have they fled, not from the tender embraces of the mother, but from the cruelty of the monster… the same tyranny which drove the first emigrants from home, pursues their descendants still” (Thomas Paine).
